9 min read

Game of thrones kept it’s fans on their feet for entire season 6, episode 10 revealed long running theory of R+L=J to be true, indicating Jon Snow is Son of Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark. Which brings us to our present article “Is Jon Snow is Azor Ahai ?” .

First let us know what is this fuzz all about, who or what is this Azor Ahai and why is this keep popping up in GOT theories and why Melisandre is so hyped up about him ?. Azor Ahai is part of Game of Throne Lore which mentions of a fabled warrior who fights of and defeated white walker, According to famous game of throne Wikia Azore Ahai is part of a prophecy.

The prophecy goes like this  “According to prophecy, our champion will be reborn to wake dragons from stone and reforge the great sword Lightbringer that defeated the darkness those thousands of years ago. If the old tales are true, a terrible weapon forged with a loving wife’s heart. Part of me thinks man was well rid of it, but great power requires great sacrifice. That much at least the Lord of Light is clear on.” ―Thoros of Myr*

Order of Lord of Light
Original Azor Ahai who is mythical in nature in Game of Thrones universe is said to belong to the time of long night when winter lasted for decades. He was asked by Lord of light to forge a sword to defeat the darkness that lay over the world. For thirty days Azor Ahai forged his sword in fire and tempered it in water, the sword broke. The second time he forged a sword for fifty days and tempered it in Lion, but the steel was broken again. Third time he forged the sword for hundred days and hundred nights, and tempered it in his beloved wife’s heart killing her, the soul of his wife “Nissa Nissa” was combined with the sword and made it indestructible, fulfilling the Lord of Light’s word that he will need to sacrifice something very dear to him. The process though devastated Azor Ahai but he was able to ward off the darkness.

So how is Jon, who apparently knows nothing 😀 could be “The Prince who was promised”?

In 3rd and 5th book of the GOT our dear witch states Melisandre “When the red star bleeds and the darkness gathers, Azor Ahai shall be born again amidst smoke and salt to wake dragons out of stone. The bleeding star has come and gone, and Dragonstone is the place of smoke and salt. Stannis Baratheon is Azor Ahai reborn!”

Now we know Stannis Baratheon is not Azor Ahai. At the end of season 6 we saw that Jon Snow is born, a love child of Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark and not a bastard as they legitimized their wedding.

Ned and Lyanna

In the Tower of Joy scene, Ned approaches Lyanna carrying Dawn which is covered in blood. The camera stays focused on the sword for a short period of time.[credit goes to Reddit user hatchman88 for making the connection, which implies that Jon is actually Azor Ahai.Apart from this popular theory there are few other theories out there, So for the sake of neutrality of this article following are the other most prominent candidates for post of “Azor Ahai”

> Danereys Targarean: She fits the two parts of the prophecy, A bleeding star will indicate the coming of Azor Ahai amidst smoke and salt. Dany was literally born again from the pyre of Khal Drog, so the theorists say that Khal Drogo was the bleeding star and the Azor Ahai came out of the burning pyre.

> Beric Dondarrion: Beric Dondarrion has a flaming sword and has been reborn again but there is more than one factor which indicates that he is not Azor Ahai. First, least screen time among storyline characters. Second, no bleeding star. Third, not the main character, a very important one but not the main guy.

> Sir Gregory Clegane aka The Hound: The hound is by far the only negative character that has managed to remain alive since season one and has travelled from King’s landing to the beyond of wall and then again to the King’s landing. He his fighting with his inner demons, and now the fire lord has started communicating with him, raising his level from extraordinary killing machine to Supernatural killing machine. Secondly, he almost died when Arya left him to die, then he was reborn, when he avenged the killing of tribesmen, as this was the first selfless thing he did for anyone.

Apart from this theory, there is a large fan base who is backing up the Dragon Queen as Azor Ahai. As far as TechScoop is concerned we are team Stark. Let us know in comments what do you think of this?
